Chris Morling Transforms Victorian Castle into £3million Workspace

Chris Morling, CEO of has re-invested £3 million to create the ultimate workspace for his team as part of his mission to make his company based in Cirencester, the best place to work in the UK. The Victorian castle, which is the headquarters of his organisation now offers a range of on-site luxuries such as a Star Wars-themed cinema complete with popcorn machine.

The redesign incorporates a series of high-tech offices which runs throughout the building as well as ‘Rolling Stones’ and ‘Steam Punk’ bathrooms. The team were asked for an input on their ideal office before the designs for the revamp and upgrade began. Their feedback guided the castle re-design, enabling the designers to create their preferred workspace.

The Victorian castle was designed by Interaction, a Bath based building and design specialist, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, and a local designer. Each room has been developed with its own unique theme to keep staff engaged and energised with meeting rooms including an ice cave, ski lodge and library with a ‘secret passage’.

Each room is fitted with the latest state-of-the-art technology including:

A 98 inch screen

30 x TV screens all linked to a HDMI matrix

52 x SONOS speakers

iPads in every room to control the SONOS speakers

in built video conferencing

A 7.2 surround sound system with HD projector and sub-woofer

Customisable lighting and well-designed cooling systems.

The office design, offers employees much more than just a state of the art office space as the company has been recognised as one of the best places to work in the UK. The team enjoys an all-expenses-paid mini break abroad each year to destinations such as Florida, New York, Budapest, Dubrovnik and Copenhagen. Speaking of bonuses, employees have received an annual boost of up to 45% in recent years alongside £5,000 to donate to a charity of their choice – totaling up to a quarter of a million each year. employees are treated to free breakfast, flexible start times, monthly socials both in the evening and at lunchtime, and weekly beers to celebrate an early finish every Friday. 12.5 Miles of cable was used for the revamp.

3,000 carpet tiles were used.

150 people were involved in the refurbishment.

275 electricity sockets are in the castle.

The Castle has 8 fridges.

The Ice Cave is the most unique aspect of the design.

Getting the 98 inch screen into the Castle was the biggest challenge faced by the designers in order to protect the ancient heritage.

The oak staircase installed outside the back of the building is the most expensive element of the design.
